the Beijinger's Bar of the Week

Another month, another hotel bar seeking to distinguish itself from the crowd. Provincia at the JW Marriott City Wall strives to do this by being Beijing’s first bar and kitchen theater. That’s unusual enough, you might well think – but they add to the exciting mix by opting for a Mediterranean theme. The huge Tuscan doors signal this; as you walk through them, you’ll be met with a feast for the eyes. The designers of the bar have created a split-level drinking den with the intimate feel of an illicit lounge. On the upper level, which has abundant table seating of varying degrees of luxuriant comfort, the floor appears to be carpeted. In reality, the “carpet” is a trompe l’oeil created of colored glass. Much of the decor is not what it first seems. There is a sense of the ordered chaos that Philippe Starck chose for Lan. Tables at which one stands to have a drink are attached to the ceiling with poles; they double up as stages for dancers. In another nice touch, all of the speakers are recessed into the roof, making the bar even more spacious. The bar itself contains the DJ booth, where the in-house female DJs spin for your pleasure. An open kitchen creates upmarket bar snacks and, of course, you can choose a fine selection of beverages. Aside from the extensive wine list, the plentiful options include Birra Moretti from Italy (RMB 45) and cocktails ranging from RMB 60-75. If the management makes good on their promises to be as creative with their events as they have been with the bar, then Provincia will be far from provincial. Jonathan White

the Beijinger's Restaurant of the Week

YellowStone is unlike any other hotel restaurant – no hotel attached. Situated at the edge of a small park in front of its hotel, adjacent to the Bird’s Nest, YellowStone is a short walk for Crowne Plaza guests, but spares other diners the necessity of passing through the lobby, helping to create a more casual environment. Our spinach salad starter (RMB 62) was finely put together, allowing room for each distinctive flavor (blue cheese, pear and a raspberry-tinged dressing) to come through. The rigatoni with chorizo and feta (RMB 68) was almost a meal in itself. Fortunately, we saved space for the huge Australian rib eye (RMB 218), whose chimichurri sauce is one of several Latin American twists that Mexican chef Alexandro Hamacher brings to the European-style menu. YellowStone
Located in the park in front of the Crowne Plaza Park View Wuzhou (adjacent to the Bird’s Nest), diners can relax inside or on the terrace overlooking the park while enjoying modern and innovative cuisine. One of his concubines couldn’t stand the heartache of losing the official from her life and as a tragic result she hung herself in that very building. Since this day, weird and abnormal things keep occurring; apparently people can still hear someone crying during storms or nights that coincided with a full moon.

Last Week's Events of Note

I liked how hard driving they sounded without being too over-the-top “heavy” and I also liked how the female vocalist didn’t seem to be completely into herself like so many others in her position. Hell, she even seemed a bit shy. But then again, how can she be shy when she wails so intensely?
