WAP/Mobile - Your Favourite Sites?

These are the sites I go to frequently on my PDA when I am out and about... please share your favourite sites )

Browsers
I use WM6 so I use the build in Windows Mobile IE browser, but if I didn't
http//www.operamini.com/download/

Beijing/China/Chinese sites

English/Chinese/Pinyin Dictionary
http//www.mdbg.net/chindict/mobile.php (thanks to this forum!)
This is an EXCELLENT online dictionary that allows you to search by
Chinese, PinYin or English. It is much better than the various
dictionaries I have tried on my PDA even though it doesn't have 'sound' (although I never had Pleco which I hear is better). Best of all, it is web based, so it doesn't take up memory or crash.

The Beijinger Directory
http//www.mobilebeijing.com (of course!)
The full directory from That's BJ (www.thebeijinger.com) including
the reviews. You can search by category, just like on the website,
and it is bilingual.

Mobile Native
http//www.mobnat.com
You can search for locations in Beijing, there is not a 'directory' like on mobilebeijing. The feature I really like is 'places near this
location' )

News Sites
New York Times - http//mobile.nytimes.com
Wall Street Journal - http//mobile2.wsj.com/device/index.php
BBC - http//www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/index.shtml

Social Networking
Facebook - http//m.facebook.com/

Google
Search - http//yidong.google.com/m?hl=en
Gmail - http//m.gmail.com

IDD Calls
http//mobile.jajah.com/mobilemini/

Unfortunately, my phone (Treo 750v with Windows Mobile 6) isn't really powerful enough for Google Maps, Skype or MSN, they just don't work as well as they used to (

What other great WAP/GPRS (eventually 3G!) sites do you find useful??

Thanks for sharing!

Re: WAP/Mobile - Your Favourite Sites?

Is Opera Mini not GFWed? It stopped connecting for me maybe 6 months ago, so I installed UCWeb which works fine, but it doesn't have all the features Opera does (or at least the English version doesn't, the Chinese one has a higher version number so it's probably more advanced). Maybe I should try Opera again to see if it works again now.

EDIT: to answer the question, BBC News Mobile sucks, it's designed for low-end WAP handsets from like 10 years ago. http://news.bbc.co.uk/text_only.stm (the low graphics version for desktop machines - "text only" is a lie) is way better, and completely compatible with all modern mobiles.

Use the nciku Mobile Chinese Dictionary - the same dictionary content as nciku.com, but for mobile phones.

Re: WAP/Mobile - Your Favourite Sites?

Thanks for the tip on BBC.... they changed their mobile site about a month ago to a design with a lot of graphics that isn't nearly as good for a mobile as the old site... I'll try the link you mentioned instead!

Just also saw your tagline - very cool, and you work for nciku. I love the character input!

Re: WAP/Mobile - Your Favourite Sites?

nciku is working on a mobile version too, although it will still be a while before it gets released and there's no character input tool. I'll come and spam this thread again when it gets launched.

Another suggestion: if you can't get the MSN client to run on your phone, there's a mobile version of MSN WebMessenger at http://mim.live.com , or you could also download the Java ME version instead of the Windows Mobile one from http://mobile.msn.com.cn/Download.aspx

Use the nciku Mobile Chinese Dictionary - the same dictionary content as nciku.com, but for mobile phones.

Re: WAP/Mobile - Your Favourite Sites?

BBC
BBC has a better link now:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/nolpda/ukfs_news/hi/default.stm

Chinese-Forums
Chinese-Forums.com has a mobile version, where you can read and post to the forum:
http://www.chinese-forums.com/forums.php?styleid=5

MSN Live
https://mid.live.com
Still not reliable or fast enough for me

OperaMini
For some silly reason, can't get it on my Palm Treo 750v, as it doesn't have Java... and I haven't found a good download to enable java... which is a real shame because it is great... next phone!

Re: WAP/Mobile - Your Favourite Sites?

I said I'd post here again when we launched the nciku Mobile Chinese Dictionary, and we launched it yesterday. It's a slimmed-down version of the dictionary content on nciku.com, optimised for mobile phones - it doesn't include all the advanced features of the main website, but it should be useful when you're out and about and need to look up a Chinese word. You can find it at m.nciku.com.

(yes, I know this post is a bit promotional, but I still think it's relevant to the thread)

Use the nciku Mobile Chinese Dictionary - the same dictionary content as nciku.com, but for mobile phones.
